blitzcon stopped by last weekend for the Feast, which gave me an excuse to watch a reasonable amount of video for the first time in a number of months, even though there were plenty of people there making fun of me. In case you actually want to get me to post about some of them, here are your choices (I'm sure he'll point out if I've forgotten any; it was a bit haphazard due to using a random computer without proper codecs):
「Candy☆Boy」 0–2
「チョコミミ」/Choko-Mimi 1
「恋姫無双」/Koi-HimeMusō 1
「スレイヤーズR」/Slayers R 1–3
Of course, all (except the one I've only downloaded for nostalgia) are already reviewed on Yuri na Hi-Bi, so the only two people who may give a damn can just read those ones.

A) People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blogs & replace any question that they dislike with a new question formulated by themselves.
Sadly, it's more interesting to answer other people's questions than ones I've specifically chosen to answer. I could have made up some questions in expectation of people I'm tagging, but
B) Tag 8 people to do this quiz & those who are tagged cannot refuse. These people must state who they were tagged by & cannot tag the person whom they were tagged by. Continue this game by sending it to other people.
I was tagged. Really. See here for details. (Interestingly, I also typed "Avalon" into another field in a form I was filling out at the same time as I was getting to this.) In terms of my tags, I considered whether I should tag people to galvanize those who don't post or to get more out of those who do, but decided that the latter would be less misanthropic. I'm looking at you,
arifyn,
aseop_,
bladeforge,
blitzcon, Ms.
darkenez0_o, Ms.
Maelwaedd, Ms.
oneirotsai (despite the fact that you're tentatively not having an LJ anymore), and
phoenix_talon. (Wow, I really had to scrape the bottom of the barrel by that criterion to get eight.)
1. What are your nicknames?
Some call me "Mike," and my pen name is "Mikael Wai-Am Wong." I haven't been called "Mikey" for a decade or two, as far as I know. I guess that means you can guess what my real given name is, but that's a far cry from identity theft. (Hell, my legal name is four words.) Interestingly enough, when I was a child, I went through a phase where I required people to call me only by my full first name, which only caused my friends to try to make me angry by calling me be an abbreviation. I don't know why I wanted that. Interestingly enough, my brother now makes the same demand of others, despite the fact that he's 21 and has no way of knowing that I once did it.
2. What do you do before bedtime?
Get home from work, take drugs, eat a bit
3. What fandom(s) are you most into at the moment?
I don't really do much with fandom. I have a couple of fan works listed as starter projects, but neither is terribly important to me.
4. What is your favorite scent?
I've commented on this earlier, so I'll just say that I don't have one.
5. What video[ ]games are you playing at the moment?
I've just finished ~an epic~ (and haven't gotten around to posting my corrections to the faulty information I gave), and I've been slacking on most of my training, so just Brain Age² at the moment.
6. What do you eat the most?
Probably frozen peas
7. What's your favorite pair of socks?
I don't differentiate between the socks that I wear, not even to put them in pairs.
8. What was your first big fandom?
The only time I really paid any attention to any fan community was with Slayers.
9. Is there anything that has made you happy in the past few days?
I've read some amusing stuff (to be noted in a later post and had some interesting ideas. Also, anytime work stops is nice.
10. Do you have a good body-image?
No, but I don't care about that anyway. I have a policy of wearing trousers when I go to public places.
11. Is being tagged fun?
As I've noted before, I find memes amusing to do. They're also an excuse to tell people things about myself, despite the fact that they're not interested.
12. What websites do you visit daily?
This has not changed since last time I was asked, except that I've started using My Yahoo! but haven't managed to get it to be routine yet.
13. What city, country would you most want to live in if not where you are now?
Currently, I'm working on trying to get to Bellevue, USA.
14. What kind of person do you think the person who tagged you is?
See above for notes on whether or not I was tagged. In that semi-hypothetical situation, I would say that I don't know her, but she seems like a good person who is perhaps a bit trusting of strangers and not easily creeped out.
15. What’s the last song that got stuck in your head?
That's already a field in LJ posts for that.
16. What’s your favorite item of clothing?
My black shirt. It's too bad I can't find more of those.
17. What's better: to give or to receive?
To receive, although it's somewhat irritating when I get something I don't want.
18. What would you do if you see $100 lying on the ground?
That depends a lot on the rest of the situation. In general, if there's no obvious dropper present, I would probably turn it in to whatever authorities have jurisdiction (the police, a building lost and found, et cetera).
19. What items could you not go without during the day?
"Can" is a hyperbole in most cases. I have kept living for 24 hours without pretty much anything at one point or another, but I'm the worst for wear without my glasses, drugs, and nourishment.
20. What should you be doing right now?
Typing more posts I've been asked to post, following up on jobs, working on projects and other such stuff
21. Do you always use conditioner when washing your hair?
Yes. It's included in the shampoo.
Anything I haven't bothered to fill in is noted by an ellipsis or a broken link. If you remind me, I may remember to fix those. Cut-and-paste errors should also be identified and stamped out.

Project Cow Level in General: I've made some very brief notes on the page. I may look around and get some more interesting members of the team (a dwarf hunter and a gnome techno mage, perhaps?), because it's looking very thin at the moment.
This: I've done a few sketches, including some tests for different tauren horn structures (for variety). For logistical reasons, Aonghus's horns are in the same shape as those of a minotauros character from an old Slayers fan-story I first planned back in high school. This reminded me that
arifyn might be another prospect for coloring this (on which I planned to comment, but haven't gotten around to posting), but I'd prefer if he used a different palette from our previous collaboration (to which he contributed without my knowledge).
This: Hell, even the most intellectual comic writer I know uses cheesy Scottish dialect/accent for dwarves. (When looking for that, it also occurred to me that someone has seen Alvissa and Gollum together. Also, remember that the Bridge of Khazad-dûm (dissed in the discussion of the Bridge of Khazad-Doom) was specifically designed to be hard to cross as a defense mechanism.) Come to think of it, I don't know where that stereotype originated, even after some cursory research. The legendarium apparently uses such an Anglicization, judging by the liner notes, but this isn't stated in the books, so only Tolkien scholars knew it until the live-action movies came out. The earliest well known source that comes to mind is WARCRAFT II: Tides of Darkness. Does anyone remember D&D players using cheesy Scottish accents before that?
This: In looking for other bases, I was reminded of the story of the dwarves and tauren's first altercations over Bael Modan. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, most of the description of this on Gann Stonespire and Bael Modan is just elaboration by users, as I haven't found any sources on that except the text for Gann's Reclamation. Has anyone heard anywhere reliable that it was Gann himself who tried the diplomatic efforts, or that the driving out of the tauren by the excavators and their killing by the League were two separate events? Any information related to this would be helpful. Of course, it's not terribly important, as WARCRAFT is probably the setting where the creators care the least about continuity of any I've studied, so probably not too many will mind if my story has a few inconsistencies with lore.

It occurred to me recently that if I'm going to boycott Bakuretsu Hunter, Trigun, and Uru-sei Yatsu-ra for their lionizing of misogynistic bastards, I should add the James Bond series to the list, too. I don't really care about that. However, it is a significant part of American pop culture, so that does reduce my parody material significantly.
Meanwhile, I know that it's hypocritical that I'm still willing to support series that joke about rape. I wouldn't miss SNL or Whose Line, but I'd have a hell of a time purging all the Slayers files from my hard drive, or the HELLSING parodies from my projects. And I'm certainly not giving up Strawberry Shake, particularly considering that it would require that I not get my favorite magazine and instead wait for each individual serial to be available in compilation. The only excuse I have is that these are all single cases, rather than major parts of the series.

I'm skipping #3 on the list for the moment, as I'm not coming up with much of anything good. Instead:
4. Who is your favorite character in Slayers? least favorite?
Ah, Slayers. That brings back memories. That was no doubt the series about which I was most enthusiastic for the longest period of time. Yes, I was young once (says the almost-26-year-old).
As part of that phase, I perused many parts of the multimedia franchise. I have read all 15 of the novels, translations of two of the short stories, nine of the graphic novels, and most of the original guidebook; watched all 78 television episodes (minus the parts that SOFTWARE SCULPTORS cut out of the first season), the first movie, and the first OVA series; cleared the original SFC video game; and listened to one of the drama CDs. That merely scratches the surface of the choices out there, but compared to the average Western fan, I have delved deeper into the roots of the series.
Consequently, you shouldn't be surprised to find that my favorite character is one who has not appeared in any of the media that have passed your retinas. Her name is Rémy Martin. (If you don't know why I've chosen to Romanize it in that way, you can Google or Wikipedia it.) She first appeared in an installment of the short-story series (which has a history of female guest-charas) collected here, as an employer for Ms. Inverse and Ms. Ul Naga Saillune (replaced by Ms. Inverse, Ms. Wil Tesla Saillune, Gourry, and Zelgadiss on the drama CD).
As you no doubt know, one of my chief criteria for ladies is that I prefer power. For context, in the side story collected here, Ms. Wil Tesla Saillune is easily able to defeat half a dozen ordinary soldiers with her bare hands. This may be before she reached the limits of human ability in both shamanic and white magic, but she has at least completed her training as a shrine maiden, so presumably her combat capability is supplemented to some degree. However, shortly afterward, she is only able to fight Ms. Martin to a stand-off. This places Ms. Martin at a heroic level in terms of combat skill.
Yet that criterion hardly narrows down the list. More importantly, Ms. Martin is famous for her "cutlery mania." The number of swords and knives that she regularly carries on her person is numbered in the teens, including a long blade of a foreign style, all affectionately named. Naturally, she enjoys using them as well; if she is unable to kill for an extended period of time, she suffers withdrawal symptoms. (This addiction to killing, at least, she shares with her brother, Rod, who appears briefly in the second novel.) Using killing as a comedic element is not a good thing, but she's such a beautiful character that I'm willing to overlook that.
I have never bothered to collect cards of any sort since I saw how pointless Magic was back in the '90s, but I paid up front for the "Rémy Martin" card for Slayers Fight! as a memento. This is also why I bought that one CD. I have considered buying the two compilations as well, but this is not high priority, given the fading of my interest in the series and the loss of the attention span to read prose. (Also, I find Ms. Ul Naga Saillune, the secondary heroine of the short story series, rather disturbing.)
In terms of least favorites, there are numerous truly vile individuals depicted throughout the series, but I would have to go with Zolf, Zelgadiss's mage henchman from the first novel and the first 10 episodes of the show, on principle, because he is an attempted rapist. (This part was censored from the TV series, but retained in the comicalization, even though it was by a lady.) In truth, this is more a problem with the chauvinistic Japanese culture that condones such jokes, but as the executor of the author's ideas, Zolf is the character who takes the prize. The other three who abetted him in this act come next. (Rodimus, the former knight, recused himself from that scene because he could not bear to watch torture, which could be considered to be just as bad, since he knew Zolf and thus could guess at his intent.)

Two related things to mention here:
1. I watched ICE II. It's not much of a spoiler to say that Ishida's character turns out to be an evil mastermind. (Of the roles he's played that I know, we have seven villains, five bits (one a parody of one of the villainous roles), one demon antihero, and three other non-villains, giving him a 56.25% total. He didn't get the annoying ugly hero role in FINAL FANTASY X after all.) I find myself hating her on some level for "getting the girl" (saying in in a chauvinistic manner on purpose in this case) and abusing others despite the fact that she's a lady, because the voice constantly reminds me that she's a man. I'd be interested if anyone knows about an interview somewhere where it's described why they chose him to play that role. Incidentally, you also find that, in contrast to his[er] peg-leg, her bionic hand is a five[ten]-fingered super-typing machine. I guess that's a good illustration of her transfer from the front lines to the throne room. (I'm guessing that she used to do field work herself based on Hitomi (the younger)'s words toward the end.)
Also, if you have an efficient cloning system, you'd think you'd be able to have advanced artificial insemination, so why would a bossy lady like Ms. Julia want to bring back men? They apparently use people with more individuality for officers, but that shouldn't be a problem as long as they continue to combine the genetic data of at least two people (which is most of how we're this diverse in the first place).
Incidentally, we find that the heroine's coolest subordinate also has a taste for her, and that the heroine is starting to be pulled by Ms. Yuki. Personally, I think Ms. Satsuki is much cuter than Ms. Yuki in appearance, voice, and personality (the latter proving that I have unusual tastes); the fact that she also appears to have combat training helps. I can only imagine that's she's not Ms. Yuki's bodyguard, as it seems inefficient to have one who, if she catches you hanging out with another woman, would attempt to kill you both (or one whom you leave to watch the bikes when you go on an expedition, for that matter). Sadly, given her personality, it's unrealistic to hope that the three of them could live happily after, and I imagine they're not going to split them down the middle (Yuki×Satsuki, Hitomi×Murasaki) because the heroines' relationship is more important. Of course, this series was probably never supposed to be about people living happily ever after.
2. For some reason, I didn't notice when I was looking at the voice actors, but it turns out that Ms. Minakawa is also going to play Ms. Mikado in Vol.2 of the HAYATE CROSS BLADE drama CDs, which I expect to be getting around 2007.10.16 (after it's released, naturally). It looks like she's going in the right direction, from little boys to badass tough ladies with multiple other ladies who are in love with them. This also means that she gets to strike back at Ms. Mamiya for beating up her girl in the other series (although, admittedly, there's probably not much need for the actresses to actually hit each other . . .). Incidentally, Ms. Mikado is the only one other than Ms. Mudō towards whom Ms. Kurogane has used the word "love," and Ms. Mikado treats her much the same was as Ms. Mudō does (see the subject line). I thought of making a full relationship chart for HAYABLA (as the one here only covers the relevant parts), but that would be incredibly complicated, particularly with arrows from Ms. Kuga (another character played by a big yuri actress) pointing across the board. It's also a series where it's difficult to know where to draw the line. (Even Ms. Kurogane accidentally says "friendship" sometimes, and she also can't seem to keep track of whether she's the husband or wife.)
Edit (2008.04.28): Fixed a couple of errors toward the top (damn, he's confusing)

So, since my brother installed iTunes on Mother's computer anyway, I decided I might as well make up a playlist of what I've got (I never figured out how to do that in MPC) instead of just listening to "Dancing Mad" repeatedly. Unfortunately, within easy reach, I only have the six short music tracks from a drama CD and the aforementioned piece (which, admittedly, runs to over 10 minutes between its four movements). Next time I fire up the Linux comp, perhaps I'll remember to grab whatever's left from my accidental deletion of most of my music (which was mostly Slayers stuff anyway). As noted before, further submissions are welcome.

I've finally gotten around to reading Chapter 0 of the visual novel I mentioned way back. I'd never read one of these before, so it was an unusual experience. It took me several tries to realize that I needed to right-click to save, which was a big help.
My comments (no particular spoilers):
The circle that made the game is known as Atelier of Chiharu. The Japanese loving the word "atelier" aside, I only recall seeing the name "Chiharu" used for minor characters in yuri-themed works: HAYATE CROSS BLADE, PURE Marionation, and "Kanojo" (one of the main characters in this case, but only a short story, so relatively minor) (included here and probably here). I can only assume that's coincidence, as in the case of my _hizuru comparison.
The story itself is very heavy on the melodrama, with a good dose of graphic violence and some light moments (often switching moods very suddenly). I don't know the language well, but I can tell that it's a lot more poetic than anything I write. It was somewhat unfortunate that the engine used doesn't have a system for ruby text, so ate-ji and the like have to be added in brackets afterward.
The writing isn't the only fancy part. Despite this being a freeware game (and thus having a low enough budget that they had to use open photos for the backgrounds), there are numerous full-color illustrations and half a dozen BGMs composed for the game. That's presumably what helped me to overcome the attention-span problem I have reading prose. The men tend to be a bit ugly, but the ladies (and one yasa-otoko) look quite nice.
One minor thing that bothered me was that the main characters are members of traditional Japanese families, which means that the ladies all have to use polite forms when speaking to the men. On the other hand, I rather like the concept of the family dōjō where they don't teach actual martial arts, just whatever method can be used to kill most efficiently—much like Ms. Inferne's teachings in Project Artificer. And in any case, I have no complaints about the fact that the main heroine is ridiculously strong.
Another interesting thing I noted: The heroine was bothered by the fact that she has trouble with history class because they have to memorize so many dates; she wishes they would learn about the significance of events instead. I agree with this, and I think that in my schooling, it was more the latter style. This seems likely to be a common difference between Western and Eastern education, as we are more right-brained and they more quantitative (?). This reminds me of how I could never write anything with such metaphysical and artistic elements as this, since I can only properly process more down-to-earth themes. Maybe that says something about the difference between their mainstream society and their cult media.
Incidentally, if you want a taste of the illustrations, I've stored what I've collected for
daily_yuri here.

mood: Judgmental
music: Some BGM from FINAL FANTASY VII
When my brother was home for Spring Break this year and playing Ogre Battle 64, I realized that it was yet another Japanese video game where the hero deserts the evil empire and joins the resistance. I thought that this seemed odd, considering how traditional and conformist Japanese society is (although it's starting to change). I guess that's a sign that fiction is a radical, non-mainstream element of society. Just to illustrate this, I decided to list a bunch of adventure stories I knew from modern media and see how they add up. Hopefully I wasn't too biased in which ones came to mind.
For these purposes, "establishment" is the main power in the setting, whether it's the most powerful nation, the state religion, the secret society behind the throne, the student council, the local gang, super-powerful invading aliens, God, destiny, or whatever. Where the protagonists' motives change throughout the story, I list the one that they choose in the end (as far as I've seen). Where there are multiple paths, I list the main one. Where the series has more than one separate storyline, I hope I've listed which I mean. Where I couldn't decide (for instance, in SIMOUN, where it's a war between as-far-as-I-know two equally powerful nations), I've left them out. I've also recused (?) sentai and mahō shōjo shows, as they'd almost always end up in the first one—which means, of course, that there is a bias there. Meanwhile, haven't bothered to use official capitalizations, as it's too much trouble to look them all up. And no, I'm not making links for all those. You can find them yourselves.

Observations
2007.04.04 | 15:55
location: The howdah
mood: Inhuman
music: Theme from The Writers' Almanac
Here are a few things that I've noticed recently:
※
※The comment cards for Pizza Hut in Indiana are addressed to someone named "MR RICK OLIPHANT."
※I haven't mentioned before that I've been thinking: I'd like to see exceptions to the convention that in major fantasy franchises (Star Wars, D&D settings, Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000, etc.), "hew-mons" (or "Men" in the original fantasy setting) are the chief sentient species of established civilizations (although not always dominant, as seen in Dark Sun). The exceptions I'd noticed are children's media (the Tales from Redwall) and furry fandom (Ironclaw) and a few where humans are tied for the most powerful faction (Warcraft). However, while I was eating lunch today, it occured to me that this was not true for a lot of video games (Zelda no Densetsu, SUPER MARIO BROS., etc.). Of course, I haven't done very well fighting this pointless* phenomenon, as only one of my projects doesn't follow the same pattern. On the other hand, I have one that addresses other races' views of the infestation, and one that questions a version of normal human society from the viewpoint of an outsider. In fact, none of the main protagonists of my projects are the H. sapiens we know today, with the exceptions of the ones set on modern Earth.
*I have long ago observed that, other than childrens' media, series wherein the protagonists are not very human-looking (Hobbits/androids/vampires, perhaps, but not Orcs) just aren't counted in the mainstream. Part of it is undoubtedly the difficulty of relating to someone who has an alien appearance, but there's also the lack of broader sex appeal. That's why I discarded my old story about rats, for instance, and even the animal-descended races of Project Umbra are more like the beastfolk in ESCAFLOWNE than actual furries as in Slayers. Also, I've avoided the stereotypes—again, hearkening back to Tolkien—that inhuman or dark-skinned races are the "bad guys." (Even Sauron lost the ability to take a "fair" form after he was somewhat killed in the destruction of Númenor.) A lot of the stereotypes of usual fantasy settings are present for the dark elves, lizardmen, orcs, and so on in Project Artificer, but, once you get to know them, you see that human morality just doesn't explain them so conveniently.

In My Dreams
2007.03.19 | 16:45
location: Tenchi Gakuen, on either Kashyyyk or the moon of Endor
mood: Gender-neutral
music: A bugler's wake-up call
Well, I didn't get to type up a post about the dream I had on Sunday morning because I was at the Dungeons of Purdue Game Day from noon to midnight, but here goes, before I forget even more:
Well, this was a bit of a marathon dream (although it didn't start until after 08:00)—I skipped through at least three genres, but I've forgotten all but the last. By this time, I was dreaming about a version of Tenchi Gakuen from HAYATE CROSS BLADE, except unlike your typical Japanese private school, it appeared to be in a forest or jungle of some sort, with wooden open-air buildings like in Malaka'jin. It was at least in part a self-insertion dream, despite the fact that it's a girls' school. In this case I was acting as Onyx, one of my old personae who happens to be a demon from Slayers, but I doubt they grant admission to many gender-neutral nonhumans, either. In any case, hoshi-tori was a bit different in that one didn't need to take the stars from other students—Onyx was actually striking at stars strapped to the teeth of a large (10-meter-plus) carnosaur. (It's no wonder the Wookiees had to live at the tops of the trees, until Lucas retconned that.) I remember thinking that Onyx must be A-Rank or higher, as he had a nonstandard sword, but I never figured out the details.
Before you think that this really has nothing to do with the characters in the actual series, I should point out that I noticed Ms. Hoshikawa and Ms. Tsukishima sitting around at the cafeteria—although only in the background, as with Ms. Masuda's and Ms. Nemoto's cameo in the second half of Book 6. Also, there seemed to be someone hiding in the underbrush who had roped Ms. Mikado into coming with her/him to spy on Ms. Inori. Despite the fact that I know nothing about Ms. Inori's fighting style other than the fact that she prides herself on her perception (being able to observe lightning-quick movements), she seemed to be talking to herself about some concept that she held in great importance. The name of the concept was some Japanese word that I made up, possibly inspired by the unknown (to me) word yurai that I encountered earlier, but I believe the meaning was something along the lines of "aesthetics," which is of course Ms. Amachi's domain.
And that's all. I'm sure by this point none of you were expecting it to make sense.
